Accelerator acceptance rates 2026: the published odds compared

The only accelerator acceptance rates that come from the programs themselves: YC W24 under 1%, most Techstars programs under 1%, and the ones that publish nothing.

Accelerator acceptance rates 2026: the published odds compared

Two accelerators publish an acceptance rate. Y Combinator selected 260 companies from more than 27,000 applications for Winter 2024 and described the rate as under 1%. Techstars said most of its programs ran below 1% in 2023. Every other accelerator acceptance rate you see quoted is an estimate.

Comparison pages quote accelerator acceptance rates to the decimal and cite nothing. The precise-looking ranges that circulate for YC, Techstars and 500 Global do not link back to a program page, because the programs never published those ranges.

This page carries only figures a program put in writing. Two programs did. Where a program has published nothing, the table below says "not published" instead of filling the cell with a guess.

The 2026 table of published accelerator acceptance rates

Every cell comes from the program's own site. Read the middle column before the percentage, because the denominators are not the same thing.

Program Published acceptance rate What the number counts Year Source
Y Combinator Under 1% 260 companies from more than 27,000 applications, one batch (Winter 2024) 2024 YC blog
Techstars Below 1% Most of its accelerator programs in 2023, program by program 2024 Techstars newsroom
500 Global Flagship Not published Terms page publishes $150,000 for 6%, no acceptance figure 2024 500 Global
All other programs Not published No program-published figure found n/a n/a

Three denominators are hiding in that table: applications to one batch, applications to one program inside a global network, and applications across a network's entire history. Any page that averages them into a single ranking is inventing a comparison the sources do not support.

What the YC acceptance rate actually measures

The YC acceptance rate you can cite is a single-batch number, not a standing statistic. Y Combinator reported 260 companies selected from more than 27,000 applications for Winter 2024 and called the resulting rate under 1% (Y Combinator).

Do not carry that figure forward to other cohorts. It describes W24. YC has not published a rate that applies to every batch, and batch size and application volume both move, so treating one cohort as the permanent answer to "how hard is it to get into YC" is the error the comparison pages make.

Use it as a floor, not a forecast. The useful takeaway from W24 is directional: the odds are sub-1%, which is a reason to write the application properly rather than a reason to skip it. The mechanics of the form are covered in how to apply to YC in 2026.

Why the Techstars acceptance rate is not one number

Techstars published a rate for most of its programs, which is not the same as a rate for Techstars. The company said that in 2023, most of its accelerator programs had an acceptance rate below 1% (Techstars). "Most" leaves programs outside that band, and Techstars did not say which.

Scale is the reason the number splinters. Techstars described its 2024 plans as investing in roughly 700 to 800 companies through more than 50 accelerator programs in more than 30 locations (Techstars). Applications and selections happen at the program level, so the network total is not the rate any individual founder faces.

Pick the program, then apply. Techstars says its application evaluates the business, progress and traction, the team, market and competition, and program preference (Techstars). Program preference being an explicit criterion means a scattergun application across every location works against you. Choose the one where your sector fit is obvious, as covered in how to apply to Techstars in 2026.

Which accelerator is hardest to get into? What the odds actually support

Nobody can rank startup accelerator selectivity from published data, and anyone who does is guessing. The two available figures put YC's Winter 2024 batch and most Techstars programs in the same sub-1% band, not in an order.

"Not published" is a real answer, not a gap to fill. 500 Global's Flagship page sets out the program and its investment terms, $150,000 for a 6% stake subject to terms and diligence, without publishing an acceptance rate (500 Global). That absence is information: it means every 500 Global percentage in circulation was produced by someone outside 500 Global.

The one honest ranking of accelerator odds in 2026 is a two-item list: sub-1%, and unknown. For the wider view of who was running programs this cycle, see the H1 2026 accelerator report.

What to do when the odds are under 1%

Optimize for the things that are inside your control, because the acceptance rate is not. Three moves, in order.

  1. Write the application against the published criteria. Techstars lists business, progress and traction, team, market and competition, and program preference (Techstars). Answer each one explicitly instead of writing a generic narrative.
  2. Be specific and complete. Techstars' own guidance tells founders to be specific, fill in the optional sections, and be honest about revenue, competition and circumstances (Techstars). Skipping optional fields in a sub-1% process is unforced.
  3. Compare the offer, not the prestige. A program's terms are published far more often than its acceptance rate, so compare on terms. The numbers sit in accelerator equity terms compared.

Then run the raise in parallel. Most founders applying to these programs are raising either way, and the ones who do not get in still need a round. Causo matches you to the investors most likely to fund your stage and sector and drafts the outreach, so a rejection costs you a week rather than a quarter.

Check the program's site for the current cycle before you plan around a deadline. Dates and batch structures change, and the acceptance figures above are attached to specific past cohorts, not to whatever cycle is open now.

Program-by-program detail lives in the individual guides: the South Park Commons application and the Sequoia Arc application are the two most-read. See also what each accelerator takes in equity and 2026 accelerator application deadlines.

FAQ

What is Y Combinator's acceptance rate? Y Combinator published a figure for its Winter 2024 batch: 260 companies selected from more than 27,000 applications, which YC described as an acceptance rate under 1%. That number covers one batch, not a calendar year and not the program's history. YC does not publish a standing acceptance rate, so any single percentage quoted for other cohorts is someone's estimate rather than a program figure.

How hard is it to get into Techstars? Techstars stated that in 2023, most of its accelerator programs had an acceptance rate below 1%. The wording matters: it applies to most programs, not all of them, and Techstars ran more than 50 accelerator programs across more than 30 locations in 2024. Odds therefore differ by program, and Techstars has not published per-program rates.

Which accelerator is hardest to get into? The published data does not support a ranking. Y Combinator reported an acceptance rate under 1% for Winter 2024, and Techstars reported below 1% for most of its programs in 2023, which puts both in the same band rather than ordering them. Every other major accelerator, including 500 Global, publishes no acceptance rate at all, so it cannot be placed on the list either way.

How many companies apply to accelerators? Only a few programs publish application volume. Y Combinator reported more than 27,000 applications for its Winter 2024 batch, and Techstars said its selection process draws on 17 years of data covering hundreds of thousands of applications. Neither figure describes the accelerator market as a whole, because most programs publish nothing about how many applications they receive.

Is Techstars harder to get into than Y Combinator? This is not answerable from published data. Both reported figures below 1%, YC for its Winter 2024 batch and Techstars for most of its programs in 2023, and neither published the precision needed to rank one against the other. Techstars also planned to invest in roughly 700 to 800 companies during 2024 across more than 50 programs, so its odds depend heavily on which program you apply to.
