Raising seed round Nordics: Stockholm benchmarks for 2026

Small home markets change what Nordic seed traction has to prove. Here is what the primary data says about round sizes, pricing anchors and who is deploying.

Raising seed round Nordics: Stockholm benchmarks for 2026

Raising seed round Nordics means benchmarking against Europe rather than Sweden: no primary source publishes a Swedish median seed size, so the defensible anchor is the $1.4 million European median seed round Atomico recorded for 2024. Nordic pre-seed and seed deal value rose 22.7% that year even as total Nordic venture deal value fell 30.9% (PitchBook).

As of August 2026, these are the periods behind every number below. Nordic country figures are full-year 2024, from PitchBook's 2025 Nordic Private Capital Breakdown. The European seed median is full-year 2024, from Atomico. Investor deal counts run to June 30, 2025, from CB Insights. The US pricing comparison is Q4 2025, from Carta. Nordic venture data publishes annually, so this page moves on an annual cadence, not a weekly one.

The Nordic model differs from the rest of Europe, and it starts with market size. A company selling only inside Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Norway has not yet shown it can reach venture scale, which makes international pull a seed-stage question here rather than a Series A one.

Sweden startup funding and the Nordic benchmark table

Every figure carries its period, because the Nordic set is annual and the US comparison is quarterly.

Metric Latest reported figure Period Source
Nordic VC deal value 5.2 billion euros, down 30.9% year over year Full-year 2024 PitchBook
Nordic pre-seed and seed deal value Up 22.7%, and 11.5% of all Nordic VC deal value Full-year 2024 PitchBook
Sweden startup funding 2.4 billion euros, down 41.7% year over year Full-year 2024 PitchBook
Median European seed round $1.4 million Full-year 2024 Atomico
US median post-money seed valuation $24 million, dilution roughly 19% to 20% Q4 2025 Carta

Do not quote the 5.2 billion euro headline as though it were current. It is calendar 2024, and the split inside it matters more: first-check value grew while the aggregate fell.

What Nordic valuations look like next to Europe and the US

Stop hunting for a Swedish median seed round, because the primary sources do not publish one. The honest substitute is the European median seed round of $1.4 million in 2024, labeled as European, from Atomico, which also reports that the 2024 US median seed round ran more than twice the European median.

The US number is a reference point, not your benchmark. Carta reported a US median post-money seed valuation of $24 million in Q4 2025, with dilution of roughly 19% to 20%. Quoting that at a Stockholm partner marks you as someone who has not checked local comparables.

Do not price off Series A comparables in your own city either. PitchBook describes the Nordic market as structurally weighted toward Series A and Series B, which makes later-stage rounds a poor proxy for a first institutional check. Expect a longer process than any benchmark implies: Carta and a16z speedrun describe the 2025 seed market as leaner teams, longer timelines, a widening gap between median and top-tier valuations, and an AI valuation premium.

Nordic seed investors: who was actually deploying

Deal volume is an activity signal, not proof that anyone will lead your seed. Use the ranking to shortlist, then verify stage and check size fund by fund.

  • EQT Ventures led the Nordic ranking: 67 startup deals since 2023 as of June 30, 2025, 24 of them in AI, per CB Insights.
  • The names around it: CB Insights also identifies OpenOcean Capital, IDC Ventures and Almi Invest among the leading Nordic investors, ranking IDC on recent portfolio quality and EQT and Almi on exit track record.
  • Pan-European funds with Nordic weight count too: Index Ventures invests across Europe with an emphasis on the Nordics and has invested at pre-seed and seed stage.

Stockholm VC funding, and what Helsinki, Copenhagen and Oslo change

Stockholm is the default hub, and the deal data says so. Sweden accounted for more than one-third of Nordic deal count and deal value in 2024, per PitchBook.

Do not restrict the list to your own country. The investor rankings are compiled at Nordic level rather than country level (CB Insights), which tells you how these funds define their own patch. Norway was the only Nordic country to record a slight year-over-year increase in deal value in 2024 while the region fell, per PitchBook, a one-year observation rather than a standing feature.

What your seed traction has to prove in a small home market

Domestic revenue alone does not answer the question a Nordic seed investor is asking. The reachable home market is small, so evidence that customers outside it will buy counts for more at seed here than it does in a large domestic market.

Your seed round is European money funding a company that will later need international money. Atomico found European investors provide almost 80% of early-stage funding, while founders increasingly rely on an international investor base once they raise $15 million or more.

Plan for that handover now, because it is where Europe leaks. Atomico reports that US companies are twice as likely to raise a $15 million-plus round despite broadly similar seed-to-later-stage conversion funnels, and that US investors contributed $9 billion to European startups in the first three quarters of 2024, 35% of Europe's growth-funding pool. Nordic unicorn production accounted for approximately 8% of Europe's total unicorn herd.

Build the fund list before you polish the deck

Market data tells you what is normal. It does not tell you which funds are deploying into your stage and sector right now, which is the only question that changes what you do this week.

  • Sort by stage and coverage, not by rank: a fund with high all-stage deal volume may never write a first check.
  • Anchor pricing on European seed comparables: the $1.4 million European median, not a US headline and not a local Series A.
  • Sequence the geography: European capital funds the early stage, and international investors matter once you raise at growth scale.

Causo matches you to the investors most likely to fund you at your stage and sector, and drafts the outreach. If you want a starting universe today, the active pre-seed funds in Europe list is filtered to funds that have deployed recently. FAQ

Which VCs invest in Nordic startups? CB Insights ranked EQT Ventures first among Nordic venture investors with 67 startup deals since 2023 as of June 30, 2025, and also named OpenOcean Capital, IDC Ventures and Almi Invest among the leaders. Rankings measure all-stage deal volume, not stage fit, so verify country coverage and check size before adding a fund to a seed list.

How much do Swedish startups raise at seed? No primary source publishes a Sweden-specific median seed round size, so any Stockholm figure you see quoted is an estimate rather than a measurement. The defensible benchmark is the European median seed round of $1.4 million in 2024 from Atomico, labeled European rather than Swedish, because the Swedish 2024 total of 2.4 billion euros (PitchBook) is all-stage funding rather than seed sizing.

Why do the Nordics produce so many unicorns? Atomico put Nordic unicorn production at approximately 8% of Europe's total unicorn herd in State of European Tech 2024. The structural explanation is that small domestic markets push companies to sell internationally early, and no dataset cited here tests that causation, so treat it as a working explanation rather than a measured result.

Do Nordic startups raise in Europe or the US? Both, but in sequence: Atomico found in 2024 that European investors provide almost 80% of early-stage funding, while founders increasingly rely on an international investor base once they raise $15 million or more. US investors contributed $9 billion to European startups in the first three quarters of 2024, 35% of Europe's growth-funding pool, so American capital tends to arrive at growth stage rather than at seed.

How do I find investors in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, or Norway? Start from stage and country coverage rather than from a leaderboard, because rankings such as the CB Insights top Nordic investors list measure all-stage deal volume as of mid-2025, not willingness to lead a first institutional round. Sweden accounted for more than one-third of Nordic deal count and deal value in 2024 per PitchBook, so a Stockholm-anchored list is a sensible default before you filter on check size and sector.
