How to Apply to imec.istart in 2026

imec.istart pays 100,000 euros through a convertible loan, not an equity cheque. The catch is a Belgian headquarters and a cap that decides your real dilution.

How to Apply to imec.istart in 2026

To apply to imec.istart, submit the Belgium open call form inside a published window: the next one opens September 1, 2026 and closes September 30, 2026 at midnight (imec.istart). Selected startups receive 100,000 euros through a single Convertible Loan Agreement with no upfront equity (imec.istart).

How to apply to imec.istart begins with the question most accelerator guides skip: where your company is legally headquartered. imec.istart is the startup accelerator attached to the Belgian research institute imec, and its Belgium program looks for a technology product, a working proof of concept, a complementary founding team and headquarters in Belgium (imec.istart).

The money is not an equity cheque, and that is the part founders misread. Every startup joining imec.istart Belgium receives 100,000 euros in cash through a single Convertible Loan Agreement, in-kind support included (imec.istart). No upfront equity is not the same as no dilution.

How to apply to imec.istart in 2026: the seven steps

The form is not the filter. Belgian incorporation and a working proof of concept are.

  1. Check that a call is actually open. As of August 25, 2026 the Belgium call was closed, with the next published window opening September 1, 2026 and closing September 30, 2026 at midnight (imec.istart).
  2. Test yourself against the four published criteria. A technology product, a working proof of concept, a complementary founding team, and headquarters in Belgium (imec.istart).
  3. Count your co-founders. imec.istart accepts only teams with at least two co-founders, with at least one willing to commit full time after acceptance (imec.istart).
  4. Request the application documents from the Apply page. The full question list is not published on the site, so you get the template through the request form rather than reading it in advance (imec.istart).
  5. Fix your incorporation timing. A company can apply before it is incorporated, but must be incorporated before the program starts (imec.istart).
  6. Plan the headquarters move if you are based elsewhere. Startups from other regions must move their headquarters to Belgium for imec.istart to invest (imec.istart).
  7. Submit before midnight on the closing date. The Belgium window closes at midnight, not end of business (imec.istart).

imec.istart equity terms: a convertible loan that still dilutes you

imec.istart takes no shares on day one, and it will almost certainly take shares later. The current Belgium deal is a single Convertible Loan Agreement with no upfront equity, and the loan normally converts at the next funding round (imec.istart).

Published term What imec.istart states
Cash 100,000 euros per startup, one Convertible Loan Agreement, in-kind support included
Upfront equity None
Conversion trigger Normally the next funding round
Discount 20%
Valuation cap, non-deeptech 2.5 million euros
Valuation cap, deeptech 5 million euros
Total follow-on capacity Up to 300,000 euros as companies progress
Application or participation fee None published on the current pages

The cap is the number to model, not the headline. A valuation cap sets the ceiling the loan converts at, so the stronger your next round, the larger the share those 100,000 euros buy. The deeptech cap is double the non-deeptech one (imec.istart), so get your classification confirmed in writing before you sign: it is worth more than the discount.

Do not treat the absence of a fee as an assumption. imec.istart's current pages publish no separate application or participation fee and describe the 100,000 euro loan as including coaching, expertise and program support without separate contracts or hidden terms (imec.istart).

The imec.istart application: what the Belgium headquarters rule really asks

Belgian headquarters is a condition of the investment, not a nice-to-have. Startups from other regions must move their headquarters to Belgium for imec.istart to invest, and while you can apply pre-incorporation, you must be incorporated before the program starts (imec.istart).

Separate the company from yourself. The published Belgium criteria specify headquarters in Belgium; they do not publish a separate founder residency requirement. Relocating the entity and relocating your life are different projects, so ask the program team what your personal presence has to look like instead of assuming.

The office side is real and free. The Belgium program provides free shared office space during the program, with open-office locations including Ghent, Hasselt, Kortrijk, Brussels, Antwerp, Leuven and Liege (imec.istart). If your engineering team is remote across Europe, that footprint is worth more than the branding.

imec.istart deadline 2026: one dated window, everything else unconfirmed

One Belgium window is published with a year attached: September 1 to September 30, 2026, closing at midnight (imec.istart). That is a date you can build a plan around.

  • Treat undated months as no deadline. A call listed without a year is not a deadline, and last year's timing is not a forecast for this year's.
  • Calls run country by country. imec.istart runs recurring open calls by country, so a closed Belgium call says nothing about another region.
  • Re-check in your submission week. The Apply page status is the only version that counts on the day.

Cross-check the dated window in our deadline calendar, then confirm it on the program page before you commit engineering time to the application.

imec.istart acceptance rate: a 15% ceiling and a 6.4% cohort

imec.istart publishes no single overall acceptance rate and no fixed cohort size, so anyone quoting one number is guessing. What the program does publish are two useful bounds.

  • The stated ceiling. The imec.istart FAQ says its application success rate can be as high as 15% per call, while noting that the result depends on the number and quality of submissions (imec.istart).
  • The observed cohort. A recent Belgium cohort announcement reports nine startups selected from a record 140 applications, roughly 6.4% for that call (imec.istart).

The gap between that published ceiling and that cohort is the whole point. The ceiling is what a quiet call looks like; the record application count is what a loud one looks like. Volume moves your odds more than polish does, so apply in the first window you genuinely qualify for instead of waiting a cycle to look more impressive.

Is imec.istart worth it? Price the cap against the year of support

The offer is 100,000 euros plus 12 months of coaching and office space (imec.istart), and the real cost is whatever your cap converts into.

The track record is published and specific. imec.istart says it has supported more than 370 startups, which have raised over 1.2 billion euros in follow-on funding (imec.istart). In January 2025 it reported 341 supported startups, 2,800 jobs and 63 successful exits (imec.istart).

Follow-on capacity is the underrated term. The program can invest up to 300,000 euros in total as companies progress, and it follows later funding rounds (imec.istart). An accelerator that can write into your next round is a different asset from one that writes once and disappears.

Run your investor process in parallel, not afterwards. A convertible loan converts at the next round, so the quality of that round decides your dilution, and a year inside a cohort is a year you are not building the fund list that prices it. If keeping that list warm is the part that slips, tools like Causo handle the outreach cadence in the background.

FAQ

How hard is it to get into imec.istart? imec.istart does not publish one overall acceptance rate. Its FAQ says the success rate can be as high as 15% per call, and notes the result depends on the number and quality of submissions (imec.istart). A recent Belgium cohort announcement is more concrete: nine startups selected from a record 140 applications, about 6.4% for that call (imec.istart).

Does imec.istart take equity? Not upfront. The current Belgium deal is a single Convertible Loan Agreement, so no shares change hands when you join. The loan normally converts at the next funding round with a 20% discount and a cap of 2.5 million euros for non-deeptech startups or 5 million euros for deeptech startups (imec.istart).

How much funding does imec.istart provide? Every startup joining imec.istart Belgium receives 100,000 euros in cash through one Convertible Loan Agreement, in-kind support included, and the program says it can invest up to 300,000 euros in total as companies progress (imec.istart). No separate application or participation fee is published on the current pages (imec.istart).

When is the imec.istart application deadline? The Belgium call was closed as of August 25, 2026, and the next published window opens September 1, 2026 and closes September 30, 2026 at midnight (imec.istart). That window is printed with a year, so you can plan against it. Confirm status on the Apply page in the week you submit, since calls run country by country.

Is imec.istart worth it for founders? It is worth it if you are Belgium-headquartered or willing to move: startups from other regions must relocate their headquarters to Belgium for imec.istart to invest, and the offer is 100,000 euros, 12 months of coaching and free shared office space (imec.istart). Set that against a convertible loan whose cap sets your real cost. If moving the entity is off the table, nothing else about the program matters.
