Accounting Firms Directory: Finding CPA Practices by State

State boards license CPAs individually while the firm is what you sell to, and four separate NAICS codes split accounting, tax prep, payroll and bookkeeping apart.

Accounting Firms Directory: Finding CPA Practices by State

There is no official accounting firms directory. Boards of accountancy license individual CPAs, not practices, and federal statistics split the market across four separate codes for accounting, tax preparation, payroll and bookkeeping. Any single number you have seen is combining things that are not the same business.

Accounting looks like it should be one of the easiest verticals to enumerate. It is licensed, professionalised and heavily associated. The catch is that the licence attaches to a person, and the statistics attach to activities that only partly overlap with the firms you want to sell to.

How many accounting firms are there in the US?

The honest answer starts with what is not published. The exact combined US establishment count for accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services was not available in the relevant 2023 County Business Patterns release, so there is no single authoritative total to quote.

What you can anchor on is the surrounding scale. The broader professional, scientific and technical services sector recorded 1,790,019 private-industry establishments in 2025, and QCEW counted 12.1 million establishments overall in 2024, including approximately 11.8 million private business establishments. Accounting is a slice of the first figure, not the second.

One number matters more than the totals: Census reported 29.8 million US nonemployer businesses for 2023, which illustrates why employer-establishment counts understate any profession with a large sole-practitioner population. Accounting has exactly that shape, and a paid-employee database will miss a substantial part of it.

The four codes that split this market

This is where most accounting lists go wrong. NAICS 541211 covers offices of CPAs, which may audit, design accounting systems, prepare financial statements, develop budgets and provide advisory services. Meanwhile tax-preparation-only businesses are classified separately under 541213, payroll-only providers under 541214, and other accounting services elsewhere again.

Those are genuinely different customers. A seasonal tax-prep storefront, a payroll bureau and a full-service CPA firm share a category in casual conversation and share almost no software requirements. Decide which code you are selling into before you buy a row.

Where CPA data actually lives

Licensing is the usable register, with the same limitation as law: it licenses people.

CPAverify lets you select a jurisdiction and search by an individual's name or licence number, and is the practical national starting point. Behind it, NASBA maintains contact information and board links for the accountancy boards in 55 jurisdictions, which is where you go when you need the underlying state record.

A workable sequence:

  1. Pick your NAICS lane first: CPA practice, tax prep, payroll, or bookkeeping. They are separate markets.
  2. Use CPAverify and the state boards to confirm licensure, then resolve individuals up to firms, since neither source gives you a firm list directly.
  3. Assume the sole practitioners are real prospects and source them accordingly, because employer-establishment data will not show them.
  4. Segment by service mix: audit, tax, outsourced accounting and advisory imply different systems and different budgets.
  5. Sanity-check any vendor total, because a single "accounting firms" number almost always merges the four codes.

Assembling firm-level records from 55 jurisdictions' individual licence registers is the specific problem Causo's accounting firm prospecting is built for.

Why generic databases miss accounting firms

They collapse the categories. CPA firms, bookkeeping offices, tax preparers, payroll providers and general professional-services companies land in the same broad buckets, so your filter returns a mixed population.

They miss the small end. Sole practitioners and non-employer firms are a large share of this profession and are largely invisible to data built from employer records and corporate profiles.

They do not carry credentials. State CPA licensure and firm permits are the qualifying facts here, and no general database maps them.

And they confuse the practice's public brand with its legal entity, which in a profession full of partnerships and DBAs produces duplicate and mismatched records. The general failure of buying rows rather than qualifying them is covered in B2B prospecting for founders.

Selling software to accountants: who decides, and when

The managing partner or firm owner controls spend, and a practice administrator usually runs the evaluation. In a two-partner firm those roles collapse into the people doing the client work.

Timing is the unusual constraint. This profession has a hard seasonal peak, and a demo booked in the wrong month is not a lost deal so much as an unread email. Buying conversations cluster in the quieter parts of the calendar, and a pipeline built without that in mind will look broken for months at a time.

There is genuine appetite behind it. Public accounting firms responding to the AICPA survey reported hiring 11,985 new graduates in 2024, a sample of firms rather than a census, and among firms that hired, 75% expected to add a similar number of staff or more in 2025. The supply side is tighter: US students earned 55,152 bachelor's or master's degrees in accounting during the 2023-24 academic year. A profession hiring hard against a constrained pipeline buys capacity, which is a stronger pitch here than cost. If you are still choosing a vertical, how to find customers for your startup covers the sequencing.

Frequently asked

How many accounting firms are there in the US?
There is no clean official total. The exact combined establishment count for accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services was not published in the relevant 2023 County Business Patterns release, and the four activities sit in separate NAICS codes that are usually quoted together by mistake.
How do you find CPA firms by state?
Start with CPAverify, which lets you select a jurisdiction and search by an individual's name or licence number. NASBA maintains contact information and board links for accountancy boards in 55 jurisdictions if you need the underlying registers.
What is the difference between a CPA firm and a bookkeeper?
NAICS 541211 covers offices of CPAs, which may audit, design accounting systems, prepare financial statements, develop budgets and provide advisory services. Tax-preparation-only businesses sit under 541213 and payroll-only providers under 541214. Different licences, different software.
Where can you verify a CPA licence?
CPAverify is the practical national starting point, searchable by jurisdiction and by individual name or licence number. It verifies people rather than firms, which is the central difficulty in building an accounting prospect list.
Who buys software at an accounting firm?
The managing partner or firm owner, usually with a practice administrator running evaluation. Buying decisions cluster outside busy season, so timing matters more in this vertical than in almost any other.
