How to Apply to K-Startup Grand Challenge in 2026

K-Startup Grand Challenge runs an elimination funnel: 80 teams, then 40, then 20. Here is what each stage pays, who qualifies, and the Korea residency catch.

How to Apply to K-Startup Grand Challenge in 2026

Here is how to apply to K-Startup Grand Challenge: submit basic startup details and a founder elevator video under two minutes at ksgc.global, with a pitch deck optional. The 2026 main-track deadline was June 17, 2026, and that window has closed. Selection then narrows 80 teams to 40 to 20, with cash attached at each cut.

The most misquoted part of this program is the money. The 2026 main-track materials do not publish a monthly living stipend at all. They publish three separate pots of cash, each attached to a different elimination round, and most selected teams never reach the second one (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines).

That structure is the whole story. This is a government scheme published by Korea's Ministry of SMEs and Startups, so it pays on milestones the way a grant does, not on arrival the way a US accelerator does (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines).

How to apply to K-Startup Grand Challenge in 7 steps

The form is short. The founder video is the part that decides whether you survive the first cut.

  1. Confirm you clear the eligibility bar. Your representative CEO must not be a Korean national, and you must be a pre-startup or incorporated within seven years, or ten for the listed emerging-industry sectors (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines).
  2. Pick your track. The main track and the international-student track are separate applications on separate pages with separate deadlines (KSGC 2026 international-student application page).
  3. Skip the Korean entity for now. A Korean legal entity is not required when applying, though selected startups may need to establish one during the program (KSGC 2026 program page).
  4. Fill in the basic startup information on the application form.
  5. Record a founder elevator video under two minutes, submitted as an MP4 file or a YouTube link.
  6. Attach a pitch deck only if it adds something the video cannot. The deck is optional.
  7. Submit before 15:00 KST on the deadline date, not local midnight.

Steps 4 to 7 follow the KSGC 2026 application page: form fields, video format, optional deck, 15:00 KST cutoff. Do not treat the video as decoration: it is the artifact scored in the document-and-video evaluation that cuts the field to roughly 80 teams (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines).

Good: 60 seconds of the product doing the thing, then the team, then one sentence on why Korea. The demo is what a reviewer cannot get from your form.

Bad: 90 seconds of market sizing before the product appears. You have a two-minute ceiling and you just spent most of it.

The K-Startup Grand Challenge deadline 2026 picture

Both 2026 windows are shut, and no 2027 cycle has been announced.

Track Published deadline Status
Main track June 17, 2026, 15:00 KST Closed (apply page)
International-student track August 14, 2026, 15:00 KST Closed (student page)

Do not plan your visa around a single program-length number. The official program page calls this an 11-month Korea-based hybrid program, while the recruitment guidelines print a July 2026 to April 2027 period (KSGC 2026 program page). Ask which one governs before you book flights.

Eligibility: who can file a K-Startup Grand Challenge application

Three rules decide whether your application is even reviewed.

  • CEO nationality: the representative CEO must not be a Korean national.
  • Company age: pre-startups are eligible, as are startups incorporated within seven years, or within ten years for the listed emerging-industry sectors. Both rules are set in the KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines.
  • Korean entity: not required at application, but Phase 3 requires legal-entity incorporation and local hiring (KSGC 2026 program page).

The nationality rule attaches to the representative CEO, not to your cap table. Check who is listed as CEO on your filings before you apply.

The elimination rounds, and what each stage actually pays

Selection is four cuts deep, and the cash starts at the second one.

The main-track process runs an eligibility review, then a document-and-video evaluation selecting approximately 80 teams, then a presentation evaluation selecting 40 Phase 2 teams, then a Demo Day that picks the top 20 for Phase 3. Eight teams receive growth grants after a commercialization evaluation (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines).

Stage Teams Published money
Phase 1 approx. 80 No cash grant published for this stage
Phase 2 40 Participation grants totaling KRW 320 million, at KRW 4 million per team for the first entry and KRW 4 million for the second
Demo Day, into Phase 3 20 Prize money totaling KRW 380 million, from KRW 100 million for first place down to KRW 5 million for places 9 to 20
After Phase 3 8 Growth grants totaling KRW 250 million: KRW 50 million each for two EX-grade teams, KRW 30 million each for three VG-grade teams, KRW 20 million each for three GD-grade teams

Figures from the KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines; the 80 to 40 to 20 funnel is published on the KSGC 2026 program page.

Read the Phase 2 number literally. KRW 4 million per team per entry, across two entries, is participation money against travel and program costs. It is not salary and it is not a monthly stipend.

K-Startup Grand Challenge equity terms, fees, and the missing stipend

There is no published equity charge, no published participation fee, and no published monthly stipend for the main track.

The official 2026 main-track materials publish participation grants, prize money and growth grants, and state none of those three costs. The separate international-student track page does explicitly print an entry cost of KRW 0 (KSGC 2026 program page).

Absence of a published term is not a written guarantee. Get the equity and fee position confirmed in writing from the program office before Phase 3, which is where incorporation and local hiring enter the picture (KSGC 2026 program page).

The program publishes what it pays you. It does not publish a promise about what it will not take.

The Korea residency requirement, stated exactly

You are not required to move to Korea. You are required to look like you could.

Relocation is not described as strictly required because the program is hybrid, but important activities require in-person participation, and the evaluation considers the team's ability to reside in Korea and adapt to localization requirements (KSGC 2026 program page).

Phase 3 hardens that: legal-entity incorporation and local hiring are required at that stage (KSGC 2026 program page).

Budget for a Korean entity and at least one local hire if you intend to reach the growth grants. A remote-only team hits the Phase 3 requirements, which is where the money stops being travel-scale.

K-Startup Grand Challenge acceptance rate in context

The program publishes its own competition numbers, which is rare.

The official program page publishes 18.0K applications, 427 graduates, 214 Korean entities and a 40 to 1 competition ratio (KSGC 2026 program page). The 2026 guidelines set the overall selection scale at approximately 100 teams: 80 in the main track and 20 in the international-student track (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines).

The headline ratio is not the number that should drive your decision. Selection puts you into a field of 80 that becomes 40, then 20, then 8. Your odds of reaching the growth grants are a fraction of your odds of getting in.

Is K-Startup Grand Challenge worth it?

Worth it if you want Korea specifically. Not worth it as a generic substitute for a round.

It is most worth considering if you have a validated product or traction and want Korean market access, local partners, incorporation and visa support, and investor connections. It is not equivalent to guaranteed fundraising or guaranteed cash for every applicant (KSGC 2026 program page).

Keep your own outbound running the entire time. The investor connections here are Korea-weighted by design, so if you are contacting funds outside that market, tools like Causo handle the list-building while you are in Seoul.

FAQ

How hard is it to get into K-Startup Grand Challenge? The official program page publishes 18.0K applications, 427 graduates and a 40 to 1 competition ratio (KSGC 2026 program page). The 2026 guidelines set the selection scale at roughly 100 teams, 80 in the main track and 20 in the international-student track (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines). Selection is only the first cut: 80 main-track teams become 40 in Phase 2 and 20 in Phase 3.

Does K-Startup Grand Challenge take equity? The official 2026 main-track materials publish participation grants, prize money and growth grants, and state no equity charge and no participation fee (KSGC 2026 program page). That is an absence of a published term, not a written no-equity guarantee, so confirm it with the program office. The separate international-student track page does print an entry cost of KRW 0.

How much funding does K-Startup Grand Challenge provide? Three published pots, each tied to a stage: participation grants totaling KRW 320 million across 40 Phase 2 teams, prize money totaling KRW 380 million for the top 20 at Demo Day, and growth grants totaling KRW 250 million for eight teams after Phase 3. No monthly living stipend is published in the 2026 main-track materials (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines).

When is the K-Startup Grand Challenge application deadline? The 2026 main-track deadline was June 17, 2026 at 15:00 KST (KSGC 2026 application page) and the international-student deadline was August 14, 2026 at 15:00 KST (KSGC 2026 international-student application page). Both have passed. No 2027 cycle has been announced, so watch the official site rather than assuming the same dates repeat.

Is K-Startup Grand Challenge worth it for founders? It is worth it if you have a validated product and specifically want Korean market access, local partners, incorporation and visa support, and investor connections (KSGC 2026 program page). It is not guaranteed fundraising and not guaranteed cash for every applicant: only 40 of the 80 main-track teams reach the participation grants and eight receive growth grants (KSGC 2026 Recruitment Guidelines).
