How to Apply to Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program in 2026

ESP grants are non-dilutive and scoped to open-source public goods. Here is the 8-step flow, the exclusion list in the EF's own words, and where the real deadlines sit.

See every accelerator deadline we can verify — sourced, dated, and filterable by vertical and region.

How to Apply to Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program in 2026

How to apply to Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program funding in 2026: browse an open Wishlist or RFP, submit a proposal covering methodology, timeline and deliverables, then clear Grant Management and domain-team review. ESP grants are non-dilutive, paid on-chain in ETH, and scoped to open-source public goods rather than commercial product work.

The Ethereum Foundation does not fund startups. It funds work that startups are willing to give away. That single distinction decides most ESP outcomes before a reviewer reaches your third paragraph.

ESP prints the exclusion list in plain language: it will not fund past work, unlawful activities, financial products, projects with a planned token launch or public funding round, or art, charity, token, or investment-focused projects outside its scope (ESP Small Grants).

Being a for-profit company is not the disqualifier founders assume it is. The same page says individuals, teams and organizations may apply, including for-profit companies, as long as the funded work is open-source and non-commercial. The real test is whether you can cut one deliverable out of your roadmap and hand it to the ecosystem.

How to apply to the Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program in 8 steps

There is no universal ESP form: the application starts from a specific opportunity, not a portal. The sequence below is the program's own (ESP Applicants Overview).

  1. Browse the available Wishlist or RFP. Pick the open opportunity your work maps to before you write anything.
  2. Submit a proposal explaining the methodology, timeline and deliverables. Those three are what the form asks for, so lead with them, not with company background.
  3. Receive confirmation that the proposal has entered the queue.
  4. Go through Grant Management and domain-team review, which may include an interview, a rescoping, or a budget negotiation.
  5. Get the decision by email.
  6. Complete onboarding, which includes identity verification and a formal grant letter.
  7. Execute milestone-based work with a Grant Evaluator assigned to your grant.
  8. Publish a final report or post when the work closes.

Steps 4 and 6 catch people out. Rescoping and budget negotiation are part of the normal path, not a warning sign, and identity verification plus a signed grant letter make this a documented legal relationship.

What the Ethereum Foundation ESP will not fund

The exclusion list is the most useful page on the ESP site, and most applicants skip it. Every line below is the program's own position (ESP Small Grants).

Work ESP position
Open-source, non-commercial work Eligible, including from for-profit companies
Past work already completed Not funded
Financial products Not funded
A project with a planned token launch Not funded
A project with a planned public funding round Not funded
Art, charity, token or investment-focused projects outside scope Not funded
Unlawful activities Not funded

If the deliverable stops being useful the moment your company stops existing, it is not a public good, and ESP is not your funder.

Read the token line twice if you are a crypto founder. A planned token launch is a listed exclusion, so a proposal citing your token roadmap as proof of momentum argues you out of the grant.

Good: "We will publish an open-source Solidity fuzzing harness for ERC-4337 bundlers, MIT licensed, with docs and CI, delivered in three milestones." One artifact, one license, one timeline.

Bad: "Funding will accelerate our protocol as we prepare for our public sale and mainnet launch." Names two exclusions in a single line.

Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program equity terms: non-dilutive, paid in ETH

ESP describes its funding as non-dilutive capital, so the program is not presented as taking startup equity. Approved grants are paid on-chain in ETH by default, and recipients must complete identity verification and a formal grant letter (ESP Applicants Overview).

Two things not to over-read. ESP does not publish a separate universal fee schedule, which is not the same as a written no-fee guarantee, so the grant letter is the document that binds you. And payment in ETH means the fiat value of the award moves with the market: budget the deliverable, not a dollar total.

There is no fixed general grant amount. The Grant Management team determines funding from the scope and complexity of the proposal unless an individual Wishlist or RFP specifies otherwise, and only some tracks publish a cap.

Track Published limit
General ESP grant No fixed amount; set by scope and complexity
Small Grants Capped at $30,000
Road to Devcon 8 India University Program Financial requests capped at $500, ticket requests at five

Caps from ESP Applicants Overview and the India University Program RFP.

Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program eligibility: idea stage counts

ESP eligibility is broader than almost any accelerator you will apply to this year (ESP Small Grants):

  • Who can apply: individuals, teams and organizations, including for-profit companies where the funded work is open-source and non-commercial.
  • Track record: newcomers, established projects and past grantees are all eligible.
  • Stage: idea, early-stage, proof-of-concept and advanced projects all qualify.

Stop pre-disqualifying yourself on stage. An idea-stage proposal with one crisp deliverable beats an advanced project whose deliverable is really a commercial feature in disguise.

Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program deadline 2026: there is no universal one

ESP has no single application deadline, and the live opportunity pages are often empty. The Wishlist page currently says there are no active Wishlists and the Open Rounds page says there are no active grant rounds, so any real date comes from whichever RFP is open (ESP Wishlist).

One dated opportunity on the official site prints its year. The Road to Devcon 8 India University Program opened April 20, 2026 and closes September 30, 2026, targets India-based or India-focused academic initiatives, requires activity between May 15 and October 15, 2026, and limits financial requests to $500 and ticket requests to five (India University Program RFP).

Check the RFP page itself before you plan around a date, because themed rounds open and close on their own schedules and the Wishlist page will not tell you. We track dated windows across this program family in our deadline calendar.

Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program acceptance rate: not published

ESP publishes no acceptance rate and no cohort size. It evaluates proposals on technical approach, ecosystem impact, open-source accessibility, budget, experience, and alignment with Ethereum's needs (ESP Applicants Overview).

Write to those six criteria as literal sections in your proposal. Reviewers scoring on named axes reward a document that answers each one directly, and open-source accessibility is the axis product teams under-answer worst: name the license, the repository, and who can fork it on day one.

Office Hours: the 20-minute call to take before you apply

ESP runs Office Hours as optional non-financial support, separate from any grant application. Eligible contributors can request guidance on project feedback, ecosystem navigation, or alignment, followed by an informal 20-minute video call (ESP Office Hours).

Use the call to test scope, not to pitch. The one question worth the slot is whether your deliverable reads as an Ethereum public good or as a subsidized piece of product work, because that answer decides whether writing the proposal is worth the week.

Is the Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program worth it?

Worth it when you can ring-fence one public-good workstream. Not worth it as a substitute for a round. ESP offers non-dilutive funding and ecosystem guidance, but the official site does not present it as a conventional accelerator with a standard batch, a fixed check, or a universal duration (ESP Applicants Overview).

Do not restructure the company to qualify. If the only way to fit is to reframe your core commercial product as a public good, you will fail the alignment criterion and lose weeks proving it.

When this matters for your raise

Non-dilutive milestone funding is worth more in 2026 than the headline number suggests. Seed-stage startups raised 12.5% less capital in 2024 than in 2023, and about 40% of all venture rounds raised by seed-stage companies in 2024 were bridge rounds (Carta State of Private Markets). After a seed round, the median founding team collectively owned 56.2% of its startup's equity (Carta State of Founder Ownership), so every month funded off the cap table is a month you do not have to price.

A shipped ESP milestone with a public report is also a credential: verifiable open-source work that the Ethereum Foundation chose to pay for. Build the investor list while the milestones run rather than after, and let Causo handle the matching and drafting so grant delivery is not competing with outreach.

FAQ

How hard is it to get into Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program? ESP publishes no acceptance rate and no cohort size, so any percentage you find elsewhere is invented. It evaluates proposals on technical approach, ecosystem impact, open-source accessibility, budget, experience, and alignment with Ethereum's needs (ESP Applicants Overview). Treat scope fit as the real filter: a proposal that is a product roadmap in disguise fails on alignment before anyone judges the engineering.

Does Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program take equity? No. ESP describes its funding as non-dilutive capital, so the program is not presented as taking startup equity, and it does not publish a separate universal fee schedule (ESP Applicants Overview). Approved grants are paid on-chain in ETH by default, and recipients must complete identity verification and sign a formal grant letter, so that letter is the document that governs your terms.

How much funding does Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program provide? There is no fixed general amount. The Grant Management team determines funding from the scope and complexity of the proposal unless a Wishlist or RFP specifies otherwise, and the Small Grants track is capped at $30,000 (ESP Applicants Overview). Individual opportunities carry their own limits: the Road to Devcon 8 India University Program caps financial requests at $500 (India University Program RFP).

When is the Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program application deadline? There is no universal ESP deadline. The Wishlist page says there are no active Wishlists and the Open Rounds page says there are no active grant rounds, so dates come from whichever individual RFP is open (ESP Wishlist). One dated opportunity on the official site opened April 20, 2026 and closes September 30, 2026 (India University Program RFP).

Is Ethereum Foundation Ecosystem Support Program worth it for founders? It is worth it when you can ring-fence one Ethereum-aligned public-good deliverable from your commercial roadmap. You get non-dilutive funding and ecosystem guidance, but the official site does not present ESP as a conventional accelerator with a standard batch, a fixed check, or a universal duration (ESP Applicants Overview). If your near-term plan includes a token launch or a public funding round, ESP's own exclusions rule the work out (ESP Small Grants).
